Former MLB Pitcher Octavio Dotel Among Victims in Dominican Nightclub Roof Collapse
In a tragic incident on April 8, 2025, the roof of the renowned Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed during a merengue concert, resulting in the deaths of at least 184 individuals and injuring over 200 others. Among the deceased was former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher Octavio Dotel, aged 51, known for his 15-year career spanning a record 13 teams and a World Series win with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The disaster occurred as the nightclub hosted a packed audience, including musicians, public figures, and government officials. Notable victims also included merengue singer Rubby Pérez, former MLB player Tony Blanco, and Nelsy Cruz, governor of Monte Cristi and sister of MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Emergency response teams acted swiftly, rescuing 145 survivors from the debris. Despite their efforts, hopes of finding additional survivors have diminished, with no one found alive since the afternoon following the collapse. Over two dozen patients remain hospitalized, eight in critical condition.
The cause of the roof collapse remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether the building had undergone recent inspections, raising concerns about structural safety standards. The Dominican government has pledged a thorough investigation and is providing support to the affected families, including psychological assistance.
The tragedy has deeply affected the Dominican community and the broader baseball world. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed condolences, stating, “Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz, and all the victims of last night’s tragedy in Santo Domingo.”
As rescue and recovery operations continue, the nation mourns the loss of prominent figures and citizens alike, grappling with one of the most devastating events in recent Dominican history.
