In a significant security lapse, The Atlantic has released the full transcript of a Signal group chat among senior U.S. national security officials, revealing detailed attack plans against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly shared exact timings of warplane launches and bomb drops prior to the operations.

This disclosure has raised alarms within intelligence and defense circles, as such information is typically classified. Senators Roger Wicker and Jack Reed have called for an inspector general investigation into the use of Signal for disseminating sensitive information. Notably, Admiral Christopher Grady, the acting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was excluded from this communication.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard acknowledged the use of Signal for discussing military plans as a “mistake,” leading to internal scrutiny within President Donald Trump’s national security team. The group chat included high-ranking officials such as Gabbard, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Vice President JD Vance, and The Atlantic’s Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg. While officials maintain that the information was not classified, Democrats are demanding an investigation and have called for Hegseth’s resignation.

Internationally, U.S. allies have expressed concern over the breach, particularly due to criticisms of European partners within the chat. This incident has further strained trans-Atlantic relations and prompted European diplomats to question the reliability of intelligence sharing and joint military operations with the U.S.

The Trump administration’s response has been to downplay the significance of the leak, contrasting with their previous condemnation of similar incidents, such as Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Critics highlight this as a double standard in handling security breaches.

Defense Secretary Hegseth has denied that “war plans” were texted, criticizing The Atlantic’s reporting. Nonetheless, congressional members from both parties are calling for accountability, with some demanding resignations over the mishandling of sensitive information. (WPT)
