Four U.S. Soldiers Die in Training Accident in Lithuania

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced on Wednesday that four U.S. soldiers, previously reported missing during a training exercise in Lithuania, have been confirmed dead. The soldiers were participating in scheduled tactical training at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė, near the Belarus border.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but a U.S. official indicated it was a training accident. Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported that both the soldiers and their vehicle went missing during the exercise. Rutte expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased soldiers.

The Baltic states, including Lithuania, are NATO members and have experienced heightened tensions with Russia, especially following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has been a prominent supporter of Ukraine during the conflict.
