Supreme Court Upholds Regulation on Ghost Guns
In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court has upheld a Biden administration regulation requiring serial numbers and background checks for ghost guns—untraceable firearms assembled from kits. The Court determined that existing laws support the regulation of these weapons, which have been increasingly linked to criminal activities. This ruling follows concerns that the Trump administration might reverse such regulations.
Federal authorities have reported a significant rise in ghost guns recovered at crime scenes. However, since the implementation of the regulation, major cities have seen a decrease in these numbers, and the manufacturing of gun parts has dropped by 36%. The regulation mandates that kits sold online must adhere to the same standards as other firearms.
Gun safety groups and affected individuals have commended the decision. Justice Clarence Thomas, in his dissent, argued that kit parts should not be regulated as complete firearms.
