House Republicans Propose Large-Scale Sale of Public Lands in Nevada and Utah

In a move stirring significant debate, House Republicans have introduced a provision within their tax cut package that would authorize the sale of hundreds of thousands of acres of federal public land in Nevada and Utah. The proposal, spearheaded by Representatives Mark Amodei (Nevada) and Celeste Maloy (Utah), aims to facilitate economic development, mining, and infrastructure projects. 

Details of the Proposal

The plan targets up to 200,000 acres in Clark County, Nevada, and 350,000 acres in Pershing County, Nevada. The lands would be sold at market value, primarily to local governments. Proponents argue that this constitutes a small percentage of federal land in these states and could generate at least $18 billion in revenue.

Support and Opposition

Supporters of the measure contend that the sale would boost local economies and provide much-needed funds. However, the proposal has faced criticism from Democrats and environmentalists, who argue that it endangers sensitive areas and prioritizes corporate interests over environmental conservation. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada) condemned the plan as a “land grab” designed to fund tax breaks for the wealthy.

Broader Legislative Context

This land sale provision is part of a broader bill from the House Natural Resources Committee that also includes measures to reduce oil, gas, and coal royalty rates and expedite lease approvals for resource extraction. While some Republicans, like Representative Ryan Zinke (Montana), oppose federal land sales and advocate for improved management instead, the package has advanced alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson’s legislative agenda and awaits full House and Senate votes.
