Dallas Mavericks Win 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, Poised to Select Duke’s Cooper Flagg

In a surprising turn of events, the Dallas Mavericks have secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, despite having only a 1.8% chance. This marks the first time in franchise history that the Mavericks have won the lottery, providing them with the opportunity to select Duke University’s standout freshman, Cooper Flagg.

Flagg, an 18-year-old forward from Newport, Maine, had an impressive season at Duke, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. His performance earned him the Associated Press Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year award, making him only the fourth freshman to receive this honor.

The Mavericks’ unexpected lottery win comes after a challenging season, which included missing the playoffs and trading star player Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. Mavericks CEO Rick Welts described the lottery victory as a “turning point,” expressing optimism about the team’s future.

The San Antonio Spurs secured the second pick, followed by the Philadelphia 76ers and the Charlotte Hornets. Teams like the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, and Charlotte Hornets, which had the highest odds at 14%, did not land the top spot. The draft lottery determines the first 14 picks, with the remaining selections based on regular-season standings and prior trade agreements.

With the draft approaching, all eyes are on the Mavericks and their anticipated selection of Cooper Flagg, a player many believe could be a transformative addition to the franchise.
