This move follows a controversy involving Waltz’s accidental inclusion of journalist Jeffrey Goldberg in an encrypted chat discussing sensitive military plans. While Trump defended Waltz, stating the misstep caused no harm, critics, including conservative activist Laura Loomer, have called for his removal.
In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will assume Waltz’s duties as acting National Security Advisor, marking the first time since Henry Kissinger that one individual holds both positions. Rubio, once a critic of Trump, has aligned closely with the “America First” agenda, leading to his expanded role. He has initiated a reorganization of the State Department, including staff reductions and policy shifts on immigration.
Waltz’s nomination is expected to face rigorous scrutiny in the Senate, particularly concerning the Signal chat incident. Meanwhile, several candidates are being considered for the National Security Advisor post, including Steve Witkoff, Richard Grenell, Sebastian Gorka, and Michael Anton. Witkoff, instrumental in Trump’s diplomatic efforts, is reportedly reluctant to take the role.
Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is under investigation by the Pentagon inspector general for sharing military details in unsecured chats and bypassing security protocols. Despite these issues, Trump has continued to express public support for both Waltz and Hegseth.
This leadership reshuffle comes amid pressing global challenges, including conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and tensions with Iran. The administration’s recent peace efforts in Ukraine have been criticized for appearing to favor Russia, with Trump suggesting Ukraine should cede territory and forgo NATO membership—positions aligning closely with the Kremlin’s.
