Israeli Embassy Staff Killed in Washington D.C. Shooting Outside Jewish Museum

On May 21, 2025, two Israeli embassy staff members—a young couple soon to be engaged—were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., after attending a Jewish community event. The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, 30, from Chicago, was apprehended at the scene and reportedly shouted “Free, free Palestine” upon arrest.Authorities are treating the incident as a hate crime. President Donald Trump condemned the attack as “based obviously on antisemitism,” while Israeli President Isaac Herzog labeled it a “despicable act of hatred.” The Capital Jewish Museum had recently increased security measures due to potential threats.

This tragedy occurs amid heightened tensions from Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in over 53,000 deaths since October 2023.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, and with all of those who are impacted by this tragic act of antisemitic violence.”

The suspect is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
