VATICAN CITY — In a historic conclave, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, marking the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. The election concluded swiftly, with the white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney signaling the decision.

Pope Leo XIV, 69, hails from Chicago and holds dual citizenship with Peru, where he served extensively as a missionary and bishop. Prior to his election, he led the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops, playing a pivotal role in implementing reforms initiated by Pope Francis, including enhancing the role of women in church governance.

In his inaugural address from St. Peter’s Basilica, delivered in Italian and Spanish, Pope Leo XIV emphasized themes of peace, unity, and continuity with his predecessor’s vision. His choice of the name “Leo” pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, renowned for advocating social justice and workers’ rights.

Global leaders have extended their congratulations to Pope Leo XIV, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Orthodox Christian leader Bartholomew I. The new pope is expected to deliver his first Sunday blessing and may embark on a visit to Turkey later this month.
